Six question types, one method each

The Perceptual Ability Test asks 90 spatial questions in 60 minutes. This workbook teaches each type with one clear method, then builds speed in stages, from first steps to test-hard questions.

  1. 1AperturesChoose the opening a solid object would pass through, once it has started through.
  2. 2View RecognitionGiven two of the top, front and end views of an object, choose the third.
  3. 3Angle DiscriminationRank four angles from the smallest to the largest.
  4. 4Paper FoldingA square of paper is folded and punched: choose the holes it shows when opened out.
  5. 5Cube CountingCount the cubes in a stack that have a given number of sides painted.
  6. 6Spatial RelationsChoose the solid that a flat pattern folds into, including boxes with sloped faces.

Inside the book

768 questions in 21 topics. Each topic has a question to try first, the rules, one method, a worked example and practice. These are real pages from the book.

Topic 1.1, Three outlines: a question to try first, the rules of Apertures and the method in four steps.
Rules and one methodTopic 1.1, Apertures. The rules as the test sets them, then one method in four steps and the mistake to watch out for.
Topic 5.3, Taller stacks: a cube-counting question to try first and the fast method.
Built in stagesTopic 5.3, Cube Counting. Each type climbs from first steps to test-size stacks, figures and folds.
Practice Test 1, Part 5: Cube Counting questions on a test page.
Three full-length tests90 questions each, 15 of each type, in the order the ADA lists them.

Every option explainedEach wrong option is named with the mistake that usually leads to it, and the topic that fixes it.
  • A check-up firstFive questions of each type show which topics to start with.
  • Spaced review setsEvery topic comes back after a gap, mixed with the others.
  • A timed drill for every typeThen 3 full-length practice tests, with a timing plan.
  • A mistake finderPlus a mistakes log, a 10-week study plan and a one-page method card for test day.

Every question has exactly one right answer

Each question was checked against its model and its drawing before printing, with additional geometry tests for known failure cases. The checking itself was tested with faults planted on purpose, and it caught every one.

Questions

Which tests is it for?

The US Dental Admission Test (DAT), the Canadian Dental Aptitude Test and the Admission Test for Dental Hygiene (ATDH), whose Perceptual Ability sections use the same six question types.

How should I use it?

Start with the check-up, then work through the topics it points to, with the review sets as they come. Keep the timed drills and the practice tests for when the methods feel easy, and use the 10-week study plan to spread the work out.

Are the questions from real tests?

No. All questions are original. The Dental Admission Test (DAT) is administered by the American Dental Association, which has not reviewed, sponsored or endorsed this book.

Is there an ebook?

No. It is a workbook you draw and write in, and the figures need the printed page.

What does UNATUM mean?

It comes from the Latin unum tantum, ‘only one’: every question has only one right answer.

Found something that looks wrong?
